HIPPA Policy
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) of 1996, (U.S.A. Public Law 104-191), required Health and Human Services to adopt national standards for electronic health care transactions. Simultaneously, Congress recognized that advances in electronic/computer technology could jeopardize the privacy of health information. As a result, Congress enacted mandates that adopted Federal privacy protections for individually identifiable health information. Health Care Providers must implement standards to protect and guard against the misuse of individual personal information in accordance with specific Federal guidelines.
